She tossed warm covers back and ran quietly down the hall. She hopped on the banister for a silent trip downstairs. She should have grabbed her gun. If someone’s going to break into a house, they deserved to get shot. But it was too close to daylight to be worrying with blood clean up and body disposal.

Cops would have to be the next best thing because she was not letting this guy walk in her house and then waltz out with her things. She focused on the video feed recording the thief to her cell phone and dropped to the marble floor at the bottom of the stairs. Her bare feet made only the tiniest of taps. The burglar caught on camera didn’t startle to the sound and continued groping her diamonds with his paws.

The door to the room concealing her jewelry safe was wide open. Light brushed the walls, flickering through the darkness. She tiptoed round the door and peeked inside. There her thief stood. His back to her, arms inside her safe.

Asshole.

He straightened and grunted. She gripped the side of the door, ready to swing it shut, but he dove in the safe again. His flashlight shot streaks of light over the contents of her safe. The beams moved constantly, his shoulders worked. Was he looking for something?

She stood silently watching. After a bit he grumbled and cursed under his breath. What was he looking for? There were enough sparkly items right, left, and center that would have brought in a nice load of cash.

Bracelets, necklaces, earrings, even a tiara or two, that she could recall, filled that safe to the max. They were nothing special to her. Worth something, certainly, but not outrageously so and nothing she couldn’t easily replace.

He stepped back again. Time to get this over with while she still had the upper hand of surprise.

She raised her phone and switched it over to camera. “Say cheese.”

He jerked around. She snapped the picture and slammed the door shut, putting all her weight on the door. The thief slammed against the door, rattling it on the hinges. The boom of his body landing against the door echoed through the house. She reached over the knob for the switch to lock it.

Damn, damn, damn. The door locked with a key on the outside.
